Production preferences cannot be understood without reference to communication

چکیده
MacDonald (2013) proposes that comprehenders are sensitive to statistical patterns in their language input (Claim 1). These patterns are hypothesized to result from speakers’ preferences in production, aggregated over the population (Claim 2). Production preferences are taken to be primarily determined by biases that serve production ease, thereby improving fluency (Claim 3). These three claims, together constituting the core of the PDC, are an ambitious endeavor to tie together several lines of research in psycholinguistics and linguistics. Here, I focus on the second and third claim, that it is predominantly “production ease,” rather than communicative pressures, that drives production preferences and hence language form (M, p. 13; cf. Bard et al., 2000; Ferreira and Dell, 2000; Arnold, 2008; Ferreira, 2008; Lam andWatson, 2010). In contrast, I argue that production preferences and language form are unlikely to be understood without reference to communication. Specifically, production preferences are the result of at least two competing type of biases: biases toward production ease and biases toward ease, or at least success, of comprehension (Zipf, 1949). I refer to a weak version of the second type of bias as robust information transfer. Two hypotheses about how robust information transfer might affect production preferences are often conflated in the literature. First, speakers might continuously “estimate” their interlocutors’ beliefs and structure their utterances based on these estimates. This claim, often referred to as audience design, is what production researchers (incl. M) tend to have in mind when

Language without communication intention
This paper argues that a language can exist and flourish in a community even if none of of the members of the community has any communication intentions; and that reference to the notion of communication intention can therefore be dispensed with in the core account of the nature oflinguistic meaning. Certainly one cannot elucidate the notion of linguistic meaning without reference to psychologi...
متن کاملA New Clustering Technic by the Preferences of the Objective in Data Envelopment Analysis
The ways of placing decision making units (DMUs) in certain clusters are found as a subject in statistics, these ways usually are heuristic. The proposed clustering approach in this article considers preferences of DMUs. This study applies Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) DMUs are clustered by solving multi-objective linear problem (MOLP) and by considering preferences of each DMU at production ...
متن کاملContrastive analysis of diagnostic tests evaluation without gold stand-ard: review article
Considering the advancement of medical sciences, diagnostic tests have been developed to distinguish patients from healthy population. Therefore, Determining and evaluation of the diagnostic accuracy tests is of great importance. The accuracy of a test under evaluation is determined through the amount of agreement between its results with the results of the gold standard, and this test accuracy...
متن کاملUsing MOLP based procedures to solve DEA problems
Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is a technique used to evaluate the relative efficiency of comparable decision making units (DMUs) with multiple input-output. It computes a scalar measure of efficiency and discriminates between efficient and inefficient DMUs. It can also provide reference units for inefficient DMUs without consideration of the decision makers’ (DMs) preferences. In this paper, ...

Teachers’ awareness of students’ language learning preferences can lead teachers to more realistic and useful teaching strategies which in turn will facilitate and enrich the learning process. Therefore, learners’ preferences are to be identified and their skills and assumptions must be given due attention. Learners should be given the opportunity to express their learning preferences especiall...
